Use Attribute Sets for Subcategories (Then Display in the Grid)

This seems like it shouldn’t be complicated, but I can’t seem to find a solution, and I’m hoping someone out there can help me.  I need to be able to have specific attributes become almost like their own subcategories, then have them appear at the top of the grid in the product list for whichever subcategory I’m currently viewing.

For example:

Clothing (Main Category)
-- Shirts (Subcategory)
------ Brand (Attribute)
------ New Items (Attribute)
------ Currently on Sale (Attribute)
-- Pants (Subcategory)
------ Brand (Attribute)
------ New Items (Attribute)
------ Currently on Sale (Attribute)

Adding (potentially) hundreds of these as subcategories seems like an extremely redundant way to accomplish this, and having them utilize the attributes seems to be the best way to accomplish this - I just don’t see HOW to pull that off.

Any help, (or pointing in the right direction) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
